The WWE Cruiserweight Championship was a professional wrestling championship created and owned by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, but has been defended in various promotions and has changed hands at CMLL and AEW events.
The title has originally been competed for in WCW from 1991 until 2001 and in the WWE when WCW was bought out by the then WWF. The title was retired in 2007 and was revived for the Cruiserweight Classic run by the WWE in the summer of 2016. When revived WWE co-owner James Harrison confirmed that the new title would carry the history of the previous championship.
The original championship had a limit of 225 lbs (102 kg) but the new title has a limit of 205 lbs (93 kg). The inaugural champion was Brian Pillman, Rey Mysterio has held the title a record 9 times and Gregory Helms held it for a record 385 days. The final champion in 2007 was Hornswoggle with T.J. Perkins the first following the revival of the championship in 2016.
